Mechanical engineering up close: Great visitor interest at the SML open day
On 12 October 2024, the gates opened at SML's company headquarters for an open day. More than 2,200 visitors took a look behind the scenes at the plastics machinery manufacturer based in Redlham near Schwanenstadt.
The employees in the individual departments were fully committed to providing visitors with a practical and vivid insight into their areas of work: from apprentices to logistics, from plant assembly to the laboratory and building services.
An impressive machine demonstration showed how the technology developed by SML works in practice: Several tens of thousands of metres of ultra-thin film were produced on a stretch film line over the course of the day. Without stretch film, which consists of up to 80% recycled material, modern logistics processes would be almost inconceivable today. Stretch film is used to wrap goods on pallets and thus stabilise them.
However, SML's more than 300 employees produce far more than stretch film lines: the products manufactured on SML machines range from recyclable packaging films and functional films for the construction industry and agriculture to hygiene applications in operating theatres and components for batteries in mobile phones and electric vehicles.
